    Default Amersfoort Post War Photograph

Hi all - just wanted to show this new photograph I've recently acquired.

It's a press photograph which has a typewritten note attached detailing:

"In the moors at Amersfoort concentration camp notorious SS-man Berg, commander of the camp, his head shaven, indicates position of mass graves to Major Siedenburg of the Netherlands Army and a detective from the Political Investigation department. Berg killed hundreds of prisoners, shooting them personally"

Here's a picture of Berg in his SS uniform.

    Hope you find this interesting!

I thought the same! That Russian soldier does look a lot like Berg, but when it arrived I had a closer look and not only is he wearing glasses but the description states it is Berg with the shaved head, on the right hand side.

Hi Guys, not "Russian" ( we should really say Soviet ) uniform. He wear a US Army HBT fatigue jacket. This is an earlier war item often given to POW's. Most likely stenciled POW on the back or having a section cut out of it and replaced with another colour material to show POW status. The breeches will be German.

    An interesting photo.

    Cheers, Ade.

    Hi Ade,
Thanks for the clarification! It was easy to confuse Berg with Major Siedenburg wearing the Soviet uniform, as his pose in his SS picture looks similar to Siedenburg's. It's good to have some more knowledge as to Berg's outfit.

Interestingly, the site was recently in the news...

Officials at Amersfoort museum had recently decided to sell small pieces of barbed wire, mounted on wooden plaques for around 10 Euros, as souvenirs. The money was going to be used to support a new display area, that is planned to show artifacts such as helmets, ID tags etc. Due to understandable protestations from Jewish groups and other organisations, the sale of said items has been cancelled.

    Regards,

    Carl

Bringing this old thread back to the top...

An interesting image. Karl Berg was indeed a sadistic, cruel individual who tormented his prey. Arriving at the camp - which, it should be noted was not technically a KL (Konzentrationslager / Concentration Camp) but rather a Durchgangslager (Transit Camp) during early 1943, not long before the expansion of the camp was completed. He replaced the first camp leader Johann Friedrich Stöver. Later, during the spring of 1945, Canadian forces liberated the camp although it had, since the retreat of the camp staff, been under the control of the Red Cross for several weeks. Karl Berg, along with other members of the Amersfoort staff, was tried in 1948. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out the following year.

    Title adjusted and thread moved.
