These items are highly faked and reproduced and without direct provenance from a survivor who may have worn this Star of David it would be very difficult to determine authenticity.
Fakers have now learned to use non-UV light materials and threads and artificial aging techniques to make anything look and feel "believable"
I am extremely skeptical about the authenticity of the material. Just my humble thoughts.

Why would they sell it?
For the same reason that other families sell their relatives medals and treasures... money.

Personally, I am not convinced. If this example was original and came directly from a family member, supporting material related to the prisoner would patently be available. That would be my first question for the seller.

Therein lies the answer maybe. Contact the seller and get as much documented history behind the ownership and history behind the item. I have found relatives are usually happy to preserve the memory of that generation and provide lots of information. The stronger the provenance the more believable the item becomes. Burn test a stray thread to ensure only ash is created is also a handy test. Bit of a niche collector area but original items can go for big money. Visually it is believable and as it was a requirement under law to wear one the need to improvise and make something from rags was a life saver. Unbelievably the star of David was taxed when sold in shops thus creating a healthy profit annually for the Nazi Party....talk about taking the....
