Today, 8th May 2016, marks the 71st anniversary of the liberation of Theresienstadt (Terezín).

On the evening of May 8th 1945, the first Red Army units passed through the site on their way to Prague. In the following days, at the request of Czech doctors on site to assist with the drastic health situation (a typhus epidemic) that was worsening rapidly due to the arrival of thousands of prisoners evacuated from other camps, the Soviet military took over preventative measures in Terezín - also providing valuable medical care. Along with Czech doctors, healthcare personnel, a health service organised by former prisoners and many volunteers from the nearby area, they helped to reduce the number of casualties without regard to their own personal safety. The Czech Aid Project, established in Prague to provide relief for those at Terezín, was led by Karel Raška - the team arrived several days prior to liberation, as did members of the International Red Cross who were leading the preventative measures until the Soviets arrived.

By the end of May, the worst of the epidemic had passed - 30,000 lives had been saved. The repatriation of liberated prisoners, who had arrived at Theresienstadt from 30 different nations, continued until late August 1945.

Within the ghetto walls, some 33,430 died - from over 140,000 who passed through during the years it was active. A further 88,000 were sent to the Vernichtungslagers (Extermination Camps) and other sites located in the east - including almost 15,000 children. Of the 15,000 children who passed through Theresienstadt, only 132 survived. Under 4,000 sent to the east saw liberation.

The Kleine Festung (Small Fortress), that was used as a Gestapo prison within the camp-ghetto, saw 32,000 people pass through. Starvation, maltreatment and poor hygiene - not to mention the near total lack of medical treatment, resulted in the deaths of 2,600 of these prisoners, with thousands more also being transported to other sites within the KZ system to meet another fate. As late as 2nd May 1945, mass executions still took place at Theresienstadt.

Determining accurate figures for exact cause of death is impossible...especially when the SS were fabricating records. The fact is, the vast majority that passed through Theresienstadt, died of asphxiation - murdered by the thousands in the gas chambers. The 15,000 or so who arrived from various evacuated Konzentrationslagers in the final days, brought with them various types of disease - including typhus. The majority of the Sonderbehandlung had taken place long before then...

75 years have passed since the liberation. Today marks another anniversary. The exhibitions and buildings will open again on Monday, following a relaxation of lockdown restrictions. An exhibition, "The Last Days Of Imprisonment And The First Days Of Freedom", is presented inside the foyer of the Small Fortress (Kleine Festung / Malá Pevnost), the former GESTAPO prison located inside the Theresienstadt camp-ghetto complex. It runs until later this month.
