LW belt question

Hi Guys, I know this might sound like a stupid question but what exactly is the purpose of the leather tab and how does it work? I have a LW buckle and a LW belt without a catch ( I just bought a catch) but no tab, and I looked at a ton of photos on forums and dealers websites but can't really see how this tab works. Can someone please help out this old man

I believe the tab helped keep the ammo pouches from sliding. The other side had the adjustment strap to served the same purpose. In both world the stopped using tabs to save leather.
