these marks are on blade could they be squadron numbers ?

Hi Kevin,

these are squadron markings:
3th Luftflotte
Kampfgeschwader 157 "Boelcke"

it was a bombersquad, the 388 possible stands for the plane this man flew, a Ju388
The Ju 388 was a modified Ju 88

these markings are normally found on the inside of the lower crossguard and on the upper fitting of the scabbard, or its throat.
If the scabbard isnt marked, then i guess these markings are made by the owner and not by the Squadron itself.
