    Hello all,

I have here a non-magnetic medal which I believe to be authentic. According to Wikipedia there were two versions, a bronze and a steel.

looks to have been removed from a scrapbook judging from the paper stuck to the ribbon. A very crisp strike of the medal.

    comments welcome.

    Hi William.

    A nice steel example.
It's one of my favourite imperial medals.

Is a "steel" grade allowed to be non magnetic?

obviously the base metal is brass on this example so I assume "steel" is just the grade and not the actual metal composition, correct?

The version for combatants or bronze category/grade could be made of bronze, gilded copper or gilded zinc.
The version for non-combatants or steel category/grade was normally made of steel, but there are examples made of brass.
To the question of whether or not to be magnetic, I have no information.

thank you. I had somebody saying my medal was fake because it wasn't magnetic and actual steel.

I assumed it was a grade much how a "gold" grade of some awards doesn't necessarily mean the metal itself is made out of actual gold.
