DDR-Deutsche Demokratische Republik/ East German awards and correct terminology.
Hello all, here is a Guide I created of DDR awards, if you have any of these awards please could you take a photo of them as it would be helpful reference for people.
Held Der DDR _ Hero of East Germany, highest award of honour under East Germany. Formed in 1975 and could be awarded to both armed forces and members of the civilian population. To be awarded the recipient would have had to of done heroic acts.
Karl Marx Orden _ The Karl Marx Order, received as Most important award in East German history. Formed in 1953 for extraordinary services in spreading communist ideology, the recipient could have been an individual or an organisation. Non German and Soviet citizens could be awarded this merit.
Scharnhorst Orden _ Scharnhorst Order, Highest military order under East Germany. Formed in 1966 for strengthening the National Volksarmee by contributions to strengthening the defence or excellent service within the peoples army.
Verdienstmedaille der Nationalen Volksarmee_ medal of merit in the National Peoples Army. Formed in 1956 under three classes Gold, Silver, bronze. To be a recipient of this award you would of had to of made fantastic merit in support of the increase of combat capability and combat readiness within the peoples Army, Navy, Air force or Stasi ( secret police of the DDR)
Medaille für treue Dienste in der Nationalen Volksarmee _ Faithful service within the national peoples army. Formed in 1956 it was awarded for service within the National Volksarmee , it came in four classes:
5 years (bronze)
10 years ( silver)
15 years (gold)
20 years ( gold with flag)
Stern der Völkerfreundschaft _ Star of the People Friendship. Formed in 1959 for outstanding efforts to keep peace and promote friendship between Communist nations. The award came in three forms:
Grand Star of Friendship (high)
Star of Friendship in gold ( medium)
Silver star of Friendship ( low)
Vaterländischer Verdienstorden _ Patriotic Order of Merit. Formed in 1954 in three classes, gold silver and bronze be a recipient of this award you would have had to have made outstanding communist contributions to various aspects of society.
Nationalpreis der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik_ National Prize of the German Democratic Republic. Formed in 1949 it was awarded to individuals who made outstanding contributions in scientific, mathematical or artistic fields within the DDR. It was most common this was issued to groups of people who worked together unlike other awards that were awarded for an individuals own singular achievements. This award was awarded in first class, second class and third class.
Hans Beimler Medaille _Hans Beimler Medal. Formed in 1956 for East German citizens who participated in the Spanish Civil war of 1936-1939 in service for the side of the Republicans. ( They were against Franco's fascist army)
Banner der Arbeit _ Banner of labour formed in 1954 it was awarded to a recipient for outstanding service within the working industry what would in turn help the east German economy and would strengthen the country. It was awarded in three classes First class, second class and third class.
Verdienstmedaille Der DDR_ medal of merit for border troops. Formed in 1977 it was awarded for East German border troops who had outstanding service within their line of duty while serving on the borders of East Germany. It came in three classes. Gold, Silver and Bronze.
Medaille für treue Dienste in der Volkspolizie_ Medal for faithful service within the peoples police.
Awarded in 1956? for long service within any sector of the East German Polizie:
30 years service
25 years service
20 years service
1st class service medal
2nd class serice medal
3rd class service medal
