Greetings fellow DDR collectors. I am a new member to the forum and this is my first post (hopefully I am making it in the right place). I have a small collection of DDR items, including the flags I am including images of below.
They are the DDR state flag, the Socialist Unity Party (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands - SED: "The Party is Always Right!" ) and the Free German Youth (Freie Deutsche Jugend).

I believe all of these to be originals due to their construction and labels and if anyone has questions I will be glad to try answering them.

Outstanding forum you have here. Hope you enjoy the flags!

Here is a small DDR naval ensign I recently obtained for my collection. Well made from nylon with the characteristic triangular rings. This one is about 18” x 36”. Multi piece construction with printed seal.

Nice and in great condition. Here's mine that's well weathered for a comparison.

Ahh I'll chuck in my other small flag in too. Flying obviously not.

Nice flags... here are some of mine. The 'Dienstflagge fur Hilfsschiffe' is unissued and made of cotton - so is an early one. I believe that the synthetic material flags were introduced around the mid 1970's. The large S.E.D flag used to hang inside the Cobbelsdorf party HQ, it is double sided and all the lettering is embroidered and the central emblem is made up of individual layers of cloth. I obtained it from a German shop specialising in second hand clothing. I also have a large national flag stashed away somewhere - also made of cotton. The Merseburg fanfare banner is made of silk and also heavily embroidered.

    Cheers,
    Steve

Hi Steve, these are really nice and I feel are still under rated.

    Cheers, Ade.

Hi Ade, the SED flag is on par with pre war German banners in its quality. It is quite large and heavy too - and I was very lucky to come across it. Even in the five years I have been collecting early DDR militaria these flags have spiralled quite dramatically in price! I was very fortunate to get mine cheap.

    Cheers,
    Steve
