I think this may be a new favourite within my collection

This is the medal for Medal for Faithful Service in the National People's Army for 10 years. Issued around the time period of 1964 to 1972 . It is a type 4 variant due to the silver hallmark of 900 being below the crossed laurel branches. It comes with a very cool case (kinda like a Tortoise shell pattern?) with nice interior.

Overall I really like this medal. I have another early medal on the way so keep an eye out! Thanks for having a look guys.

A very nice example of the fourth issue. These early medals have really good boxes too. The early DDR militaria is much underrated.

Well I hope to at least get a few more early ones before they become too desirable!

Very nice, like the presentation box too.

I have a medal in the very same style of box, the only difference is the colour of the inside lining... mine is grey.

Here you go, it's actually part of a set of three awarded to Leutnant Eberhard Friedrich... he finished up as Oberstleutnant. His bronze award was made in 1963, and his gold in 1977. The case for the bronze award is exactly the same as yours - except for the colour of the lining. I've had these for a few years and thought I had posted them before. Pictures are a bit ropey... I didn't use the tripod.

    Cheers,
    Steve

I missed this when you posted it. That's a very nice example of the type.
The earlier DDR medals have the look of a "proper" medal and when compared to the later variants of the same thing they are a stark indicator of how the DDR became pressed for resources over time and the quality of just about everything declined until the collapse in 1990. I do wonder how much longer they could have kept it up had the hand of the government not been forced as it was?
