    Default NVA date codes

    Hi Guys, this issue came up in a thread about a cap earlier today.

    In addition to VEB makers codes, items were also date letter coded. This system started in 1968. Prior to this actual dates were used and also the quarter of the year marked too.

    K=1968
    Z=1969
    M=1970
    X=1971
    B=1972
    L=1973
    O=1974
    S=1975
    R=1976
    A=1977
    U=1978
    F=1979
    E=1980
    G=1981
    I=1982
    C=1983
    H=1984
    T=1985
    P=1986
    L =1987
    Y=1988
    N=1989
    D=1990

    NOTE: the letter "L" was used twice.

    Cheers, Ade.

    Thanks Ade. With regards to dates, it should also be noted that in the very first years of the DDR, from around 1956, tunics and hats were often marked DDR/I or DDR/II referring to the first and second years of production, though items of this type are exceedingly rare and I have not handled one myself.

    Also, to differentiate the two 'L' markings in visor cap, the usual shortcut is to look at the style of the sweatshield diamonds, which are different. The older 'L' is usually written on the plastic in a white font, the newer 'L' is impressed directly into it.

    Cheers,

    Jonathan

    Addon info: The year coding was planned ahead until 1995..

    1990 D
    1991 V
    1992 W
    1993 K
    1994 O
    1995 M

    Just to complete the list, nothing was ever marked with that though.
