Hello,
in 1968 these helmets were still made with a light rough camouflage and a slightly satin finish.
The inner lining has been changed. The one in the helmet is a later model. There should be an ink stamp on the inside of the leather. This shows the year of manufacture.

Side note:
In the NVA, conscriptions and dismissals for or from the 18-month basic military service took place every six months (at the end of April and the end of October).
EK 88 II scratched into the color of the helmet probably means
Entlassungskandidat (a candidate for dismissal), which means that the soldier was probably looking forward to his discharge from basic military service (18 months) in the third half of the year in autumn 1988.
Of course, such an "inscription" in the helmet was not allowed! ...
For this reason, probably not very often seen on helmets of the NVA!
It means indeed Entlassungskandidat, its a super cool example of the EK leaving their mark everywhere . Great stuff and interesting thread !
