Thumbs up SA Treffen Braunschweig 1931

    Hi, Collector Comrades!

I've just recieved a very nice SA Treffen Braunschweig 1931 Badge in the solid aluminum version. It is in nice worn condition and marked "RZM M1/17" (Assmann) and Ges. Gesch. For comparison, another piece from my collection made of solid zinc, also by Assmann. Note the identical design! -- (The photo shows Hitler in the ranks of the SA on that day.)

The SA march in Braunschweig on October 17th and 18th, 1931 in the presence of Adolf Hitler was the largest parade of paramilitary units during the Weimar Republic. Tens of thousands of SA and SS men from all over Germany took part in the National Socialist demonstration of power. Some contemporary reports mention up to 104,000 participants. Parallel street fighting between SA men and communists resulted in two deaths and 61 injuries.

Oh that's a very good question, Adrian! Honestly, I don't know it myself! I still have two hollow-pressed versions from two different manufacturers. One badge is made of aluminum and the other one is made of silver-plated non-ferrous metal.

I guess there were a few makers of them?
It's one of those awards that I've been aware of but know absolutely nothing about other than they are for the old school SA members who attended the rally in 1931 but the badges weren't made or authorised until a few years later.
Are they faked to a high degree?

Yes, there were probably different manufacturers. There was also the first version from around 1931, which was apparently not officially awarded, that is probably the one you mean. This first version was hollow pressed from sheet iron and was noticeably rounder than the second version I posted here. The second version is available with and without manufacturer markings and they are certainly faked of course. But, which TR item is not getting faked?

There are over 1 dozen variants of this 1931 Braunschweig traditions badge
    - early round versions (with recessed and raised letters)
    - later oval versions (hollow and massive, with and without maker mark, aluminum and zink)

Thanks for the photo! What you say corresponds to my experiences. What I also find interesting is that there are pieces where the oak leaf wreath in the bottom left corner covers a small piece of the swaz, while this is not the case with other pieces.
