I don't know if it is though , my thoughts are. would a jeweller cover someone's number over ..I'd be pixxed if I took it to be professionally adapted and they covered up my proof of kinda low membership, or is it simply placed next to 4 digits as it was originally issued

Doh! I misread your earlier email. I mistakenly thought you said you were able to determine it was a 4 digit serial number.

I suppose nobody can say with 100% certainty, but I’d be 99% certain that a jeweler did not grind a number off to affix the chain. Simply no reason to grind it down. I’d say there’s incentive not to…….an angry customer. GPB were worn with pride and the member number had value to its owner.
