Hi Dan,
It's a fake. Known as the "Serif 'J' Fake", take note of the "tail" or serif on the top bar of the letter 'J', the real shield shown below does not have it anywhere near as pronounced. Another point is the fake is made from zinc, which is non magnetic, when in fact ALL known originals are steel which of course this example is.
Genuine Demjansk shield made from steel that the "Serif 'J' Fake" attempts to copy.
Regards, Ned.
'I do not think we can hope for any better thing now.
We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker of course, and the end cannot be far.
It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more. R. SCOTT.
Last Entry - For God's sake look after our people.'
In memory of Capt. Robert Falcon Scott, Edward Wilson, Henry Bowers, Lawrence Oates and Edgar Evans. South Pole Expedition, 30th March 1912.
Ned has got it covered.
These have been around since the late 1970's and were made by Johannes Floch.
I bought one back then...
Cheers, Ade.
