I. Brief and specific description of the personal feat or merits:
Sergeant major ABANIN is an active Patriotic war participant since June
1941. He has been service in the 14 separate armoured train squadron since the
first day of its formation (January 1943). During the course of his whole service as
a sergeant major on the armoured train “Stremitelnij” (“Swift”), he proved himself
as a disciplined, courageous, and skilful warrior. He is demanding towards himself
and his subordinates, caring for the soldiers needs, and meticulous in fulfilling
his duties.
During the period of the combat operations, he always provided the
personnel on the battle stations with the warm food, often exhibiting courage, wit,
and initiative. During the operation for relieving Leningrad city from the blockade
in January 1943 near the station Kolpino, a private soldier was wounded by an
artillery shrapnel, who was delivering food to the trains observation post. Comrade
ABANIN, being present at the place, quickly provided the first aid to the wounded
and personally took over and fulfilled the task, while the artillery barrage was still
raging.
For impeccable service during the Patriotic war and exhibited gallantry in
the struggle against the German invaders, for courage and resourcefulness, he is
worthy of “RED STAR” order.
Commander of 14th separate armoured train squadron

The armored train Swift was built in May of 1939 and saw action in 1941 and after at the Leningrad front.
After the war it was put into storage until 1965, then restored and taken to the Kubinka museum in Moscow where it remains to this day.
