I have seen plastic overed ribbons before, done by the Veteran.
Plastic covered ribbon bars were official though and were worn in the post war years.

The plastic was added post ww2 to protect the medal ribbon.

It is there, just very dark. If you click on the pic to enlarge it, it shows up a bit better.

Exactly...
I even own a pair of sergeants everyday/parade shoulder boards where a thin film of plastic/cellophane was applied over the yellow stripes to keep them from soiling...

There exist many examples out there - including a few in my collection - where the minute concentration of red enamel has flaked off from time and exposure.
