Hey folks,
I have a question about serial numbers on the back of the USSR combat service medal. The serial number on the back of my medal is: 1.732.098.
Is it possible to trace back the production year with this nummer?

This is the medal btw. A type 2, variation 1.
The only way to find out about the recipient is through archival research. It's quite expensive though and many would say not worth it since yours was most probably awarded to an officer on November 3, 1944 for 10 years of service. If you're nevertheless interested in research, check out my website or contact me.

Most likely a 'long service' award issued in November, 1944 but there's always the possibility that is was for an actual act of bravery. Only research will tell the tale and that cost was dropping of late. But then we hear rumors of the Russian archives being (somewhat) closed as well.
Information on all Soviet military decoration's awarding dates can be found in Echoes Of War (Researching Soviet Military Decorations) by Paul J. Schmitt. We also hear rumors of a second edition of said tome.
