I was wondering if anyone can tell me anything about this souvenir medal. Were these available for sale to soldiers in the respective occupied zones or were they made post war for tourists ? It's about the size of a silver dollar and is fairly heavy. It belongs to a friend of mine whose father served in Italy during WWII, any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Al.

I've seen several of these and similar commemorative pieces for Naples, Rome. etc.

My best guess is that they were made by enterprizing Italian medallists or jewellers for sale to liberating troops during 1944-45.

One Anzio bracelet I saw was in the effects of a Canadian soldier kia on the Naviglio Canal in November 1944, so souvenirs were certainly being mede before then.

    Cheers,

    Pat

I have one of these medals that my father received. He had written on the envelope that he kept it in that they were given to the troops that took part in the invasion of Italy. They were not souvenior pieces that were sold to individuals.
