on the back it is stamped DUTY

Hi Alex,
Not sure what its for, I would hazard a guess and say its some sort of personal ID tag for kit.
What I will definately say though is that its a nice EARLY service number, (7 digits), which puts it somewhere between approx 1922 and 1955 in date. Personally I would hedge towards a WWII period, (my late grandfather was Grenadiers and his service number was 261****, he enlisted in 1939 at the outbreak of the war)
It may be possible to trace him through PRO or Regimental HQ, certainly GG have retained their personnel records, so I would assume that IG are the same.

The service number is from the interwar period. Possibly early 1930s. It is indeed a bed plate.
