i have an 11mm mauser cartridge with copper colored case and tombak or similar bullet, the only headstamp marking is a kind of an 'x' with the arms divided from a center dot, almost like an abstracted crossed cannon. any idea what this is?

i measured it with a caliper, thousandths of an inch...
bullet dia,.405
neck dia, .430
base dia, .540
rim dia, .605
case length, 2.38
overall length, 3.06
i can't find a cartridge with similar dimesions.
Did you make a typo on the base dia.,did you mean .504 instead of .540? If so your cartridge could be either a 40-70 Win. or a 40-82 Win.

its .540, a real mystery. it was given to me by a very knowledgable old timer who collected arms and ammunition his whole life. he amassed an incredible collection but had no idea what this one was. i would think the headstamp marking would be a givaway....i decided it was just 11mm mauser because thats what it looks like, but apparently this is not so. the flat tipped bullet suggests a tubular magazine.
Your cartridge is an 10.15x61Rmm Jarmann. Its a Norwegian cart. and was used in the Jarmann M/81 bolt action tube magazine rifle. Also used by Sweden.Your H.S. is Norwegian.
