    Hi,

I have this picture which was taken in north Finland at around feb 1943. the picture seems to be a small outpost or checkpoint. I can only read „20t langsam fahren!“. The text below seems to be a unit ?

Indeed, it is very likely that it is the identification code of a unit.
Unfortunately I hardly distinguish any number or letter...

I first read pz rgt 2 but your are right with Pi! I did google and look through the units of the 20th Gebirgs Armee (the picture is from a family member who was there so I guess it’s a unit from this army) but I couldn’t find any unit with the number 2 at the end except 2 Gebirgs Division but that can’t be it. I will see if I can get a more powerful magnifying glass.

    Best regards

That's where I was heading Will and with the brain filling in the indecipherable bits I was leaning towards 5 Kp (or Komp) Pz Rgt 2

Got the most powerful one I have and there is little to no difference. The only thing I’m not sure about now is the letters after 5/. I thought maybe Eisenbahn Pionier regiment 2 but they were not in Finland. Another pictures shows a small bridge over a creek that leads into a lake so i guess it was a Pionier Unit that put up the sign to warn of the bridge but I don’t know for sure.

That was also my guess but I think will is right. It looks more like an i instead of a z.

Do you maybe have any links to where it says that they were in northern Finland? I mentioned them in my other reply above but I only found that they were not in Finland but I could be wrong.

    Hi Anon.

The dates are earlier then 1943, but the unit was there.

GERMAN LAND FORCES IN NORTHERN FINLAND AND NORWAY - 22.6.1941 - 14.1.1942

    Armeetruppen / Befehlstelle Finland:

Kommandeur der Eisenbahn-Truppen (Kodeis) 463 (mot.)

    5./II./Eisenbahn-Pionier-Regiment 2 (teil-mot.)

    8./II./Eisenbahn-Pionier-Regiment 2 (teil-mot.)

    4./I./Eisenbahn-Pionier-Regiment 4 (teil-mot.)

    156. Eisenbahn-Fernkabel-Bau-Kompanie

FMP - German Land Forces in Finland - Summer 1941

    Kind regards,

    Will.
