Hi Anon,
The battles of Vermanjoki (Werman) front in 1941 were fought by joint Finnish and German forces. Between 1942 (when your great grandfather arrived on the Wermen front) and 1944 the front was in a stalemate but the Soviet offensive that started on the 9th of September 1944 made the area a battlefield once again.
The German forces sucessfully withdrew their troops ("Operation Birke") from the Werman area and retreated towards the Norwegian border. Between 18.–22.10.1944 the Soviet forces crossed the Norwegian border and the Norwegian town of Kirkenes was taken by Soviet forces on November 25th. This marked the end of the 1944 Soviet Offensive in the far north.
Best, Jan
