Very true Justin, Helmut fought from 1940-1945 with JG3 on all fronts , people forget that repairing BF 109 engines on some temporary airfield in the steppe in -40 wasn't a bed of roses !!

Were you able to get any details on how they managed to get on a plane out of Stalingrad? I'm fascinated by these stories...thanks!

Basically after the Kessel was formed the majority of JG3 that had been operating from airfields east of the Don to provide close support to the fighting in Stalingrad were withdrawn westwards apart from 9 Staffel who remained at Pitomnik, they provided what was known as the Platzschutzstaffel which was the CAP around Pitomnik to protect the daily transports in and out of the Kessel.
Eventually on 20/12/42 9 Staffel was also withdrawn and Helmut and Fred went with it , they continued to provide CAP in the Stalingrad area from Flugplatz Tazinskaja which was west of the Don and quite a distance outside the Kessel. Many of the JU52 and Heinkel 111 Transports also flew from here !!
cheers

As I've always said Paul, you are a rock star! Thanks for showing us the photos. It must be wonderful to hear these stories first hand. Unfortunately, their time on this earth is almost over, I'm glad decent guys like you will be around to keep their stories alive.
