AB 64
Army Book 64 (Soldiers pay book)
Gary J.
(The top right of the book you have has been cut off, ... this is where it would say "Army Book 64")

Re: Jews POW in German Stalag
Unusual to see a paybook with the persons original german name. Most in the same boat opted to have an alias in case of capture. Most having already escaped nazi tyranny were under no illusions about their treatment if it were discovered they were jewish. Doublely brave. A lot of jews who fled to this country prior to the outset of ww2 found themselves interned often with committed nazi supporters. Those who wanted to fight found the british establishment less than helpful but after much struggle a pioneer unit was established where it was thought that any planted 5th columnists, spys, were less likely to have access to useful information. Some were plucked from this unit and used by soe as agents, their language skills and the ability to blend in to a continental setting if sent to europe were priceless. Their military skills were also useful after the war in israel.
