I new a vet who was in Kreta.Back in Hessen Germany.He had a bar in front of the police station and his bar was covered with his ww2 stuff pictures helmets medals and other stuff.

My most famous para I knew was the one that is often pictured with an FG 42 on the side of the hill after freeing Musolini. He hailed from Belsen, right in front of the Barracks, he was married to a younger lady and still had his dagger. I remember he had scars from lots of wounds on his chest which he was unabashed about. This is refreshing from Ze Germans as most don't / did not want to talk about it. I think he will be gone now but I might bend in to see if he is still around.
