Studio portrait of Konteradmiral Ludwig Stummel. He served as the Chief of the Department for Naval Intelligence, Naval Warfare Command, OKM (28 December 1939-15 June 1941), Chief of the Central-Department of the Office-Group for Naval Intelligence, Naval Warfare Command, OKM (16 June 1941-30 April 1943), Chief of the Office-Group for Naval Intelligence, Naval Warfare Command, OKM (01 May 1943-16 August 1944) and then Higher Commander of Naval Signals and Detection Schools (14 November 1944-15 March 1945). Stummel was most notable for being the person responsible for the cryptographical security of the Enigma cipher machine and Key M infrastructure security, during World War II.
Some interesting facts about him. He had a glass eye and a limp. He was a fervent Catholic. His faith gave him a moral compass during the latter years of the war. Initially a supporter of the Nazis, he became doubtful as the war progressed.

This photo was taken sometime between 20 October 1943 (award date of his German Cross in Gold) and 19 November 1943 (the day when he was killed in action during a Soviet air attack on the Kerch Peninsula).

In the course of the recently reported organizational changes in the Reich Ministry of Transport, maritime affairs have been consolidated in a Maritime Office. The Führer has entrusted its management to Vizeadmiral z.V. Wülfing von Ditten, who has been given the title of State Secretary. This centralized organization is intended to emphasize the importance of maritime shipping, to promote its development and to provide a guarantee for the performance of the future tasks of German maritime shipping."
