Why are there no runes on his collar tab? I remember reading somewhere that the Sicherheitsdienst didn't use runes, but not infantry. Was this man volunteered from the SD for combat or is these another reason why he would be wearing a blank tab?
Without knowing more about this man, we cannot really tell the reason, but blank tabs were not unique to the SD/Sipo.
They were worn by numerous other groups such as the personnel of the SS-Oberabschnitte, the Reichsführung SS and the various SS-Hauptämter, by wartime foreign volunteers not granted the right to wear runes or special collar patches, by Fachführer (although he was obviously not of the latter two categories) etc. etc.
(There is even the possibility that the photo was flipped and we actually see his "rank" side.)

Thanks again for the info. You, sir, are an incredible treasure trove of knowledge. Is there any other way I can research this individual? Would there be any records of him in the German archives?

Thanks, you're welcome!
I am afraid, though, I cannot be of much help when it comes to the best way of researching him, as I have never conducted such individual research and have no experience in this field.
I do know that the Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (German War Graves Commission) has an online grave search (see Gräbersuche Online ).
Records of members of the German Armed Forces who were killed in action are maintained by the Deutsche Dienststelle (WASt) who have an online inquiry request form (see DEUTSCHE DIENSTSTELLE (WASt) ) although - at least as I understand it - this is restricted to relatives, persons who have the express consent of the relatives and those who conduct scientific research.
Like I said, I have no actual knowledge of this kind of research and its modalities; perhaps other members are more knowledgable in this matter.

The German War Graves Commission is excellent. I found our SS-Sturmmann here: Detailansicht[gid]=6205ccca42e42d70f3b1fa22d3c2a782

I don't have much material on "Nord", but unless I am much mistaken, at the time in question (Nov. 41) they should have been in the general area of Kiestinki (Russian name Kestenga) and Louchi in Karelia.
Quite correct , Nord was in combat in this area for much of the war . Nord was formed from SS Totenkopf Standarte 6 and 7
