Feld-Sonder-Bataillon. Kompanie B - Vinzenz Schuder
Name: Vinzenz Schuder
Date of birth: 23.09.1915
Place of birth: Simbach
Death/missing date: 10.02.1944
Death/missing place: Raadna
Service rank: Schütze
His cause of death is noted as Verstorben: Akutes Versagen mit Herz und Kreislauf (Deceased: Acute cardiovascular failure)
Vinzenz Schuder is buried in the military cemetery in Rakvere, Estland prepared by the Volksbund.
The Feld-Sonder-Bataillone (Special Field 'Penal' Battalion) consisted of soldiers who had fulfilled their prison/punishment time, but were not accepted back into their field unit because of deficiencies in character. The task of the Feld-Sonder-Bataillone was to take in soldiers of inferior character who could not be brought in line by disciplinary measures. These soldiers were also often seen as representing a danger to discipline.
The special field battalion was an educational facility, but also a punishment facility, in which the soldiers concerned were to be given one last opportunity to acquire an orderly view of life and a soldier's attitude so that, after good conduct as orderly soldiers, they could once again fulfill their duty to the fatherland. Sentences in this unit were normally four months in duration with the possibility of extending the period of service (in the event of poor attitude/behaviour) to 6 months. If the soldier failed to comply, then he could very well have been transferred to a concentration camp.
I have not been able to conclusively say, but from research it looks like there were three departments formed - Feld-Sonder-Bataillone A, B, C (I have found one source that points to a fourth Bataillon 'D' being formed too).
