Press photos.........?

I have seen press photos in online auctions, and have bought a few here and there when they're related to a topic or story I like, a specific person, vessel, etc. More often them not, they come with the actual clip from the newspaper where they were printed as well as date and time stamps. Once you have purchased such a picture, who owns it? I'm guessing the paper that printed it? However I owned a small photography company years back and when I sold the pictures I sold the rights as well. Anybody have any information on this? Thanks.
