Red Cross food tin labels
I was not too sure what section to put these in so here they are anyway. Nothing of great value for sure but at the time the tins these were wrapped around meant the difference between life and death to the Islanders that neede the food they contained. These are a few labels from the tins and packets contained in the Red Cross boxes that were brought to the Islands by the SS.Vega. The Islands were cut off from France after the Normandie landings and food was becoming scarce. Our Island Bailiff was allowed by the German Kommandant to contact the Red Cross via radio and food shipments to the Islands were arranged. Undoubtedely many people would have died if the parcels had not been sent, hense the reason for people keeping labels and Red Cross boxes as souvenirs.... they meant so much to them.
In such drab and dreary times the labels alone were bright enough to put a smile on the peoples faces. Such items are of little monetary value but they are just so much more than that to the people who were here in the Channel Islands during the German Occupation.
