Perhaps by placing an Army rank of Unteroffizier on the POW card he thought that this might make his treatment better. Prisoners were classified as white, grey or black depending on their Nazi sympathies, with black being the ardent Nazis - of which members of the Waffen SS might normally be classed as. But if he called himself an Unteroffizier then this might paint him as grey or even white, thus making him appear less of a threat and perhaps receive better treatment whilst in captivity?
