Sorry for coming in late, just saw this. I have in my collection a mixed metal Pioneer helmet. Wappen, spike, and chin strap are silver metal and the remaining fittings are grey steel. This particular helmet was a bring back by a family member, so I know its history. If I saw this at a show for sale I may pass on it, thinking it a put together. It does appear that some helmets were made using left over parts and new parts. I have come across other documented mixed part helmets, generally they are date either 1915 or 1918. It would seem to me that the 1915 dated ones were made to meet demands of an expanding army. The 1918 dated may have been due to material shortages.
Generally mixed metal helmets should be avoided unless it can be documented.
