    Hi Stefan,

Both the Independence and Merit crosses and ribbons look good. The VM looks like post war a re-strike from surviving Knedler dies. It has the large ‘flat blade’ suspension tab (that holds the ribbon ring) characteristic of the restrikes. Also visible are the ‘offset’ ball ends found on some of these crosses which resulted from the misalignment of the stamping dies.

These VM’s were produced in the years immediately following the war as supposed legitimate issues and also vet replacements. Regarding the former, for a short spell it seems there were instances where the new communist authorities turned a blind eye to the display of the pre-war crowned eagle.

    Regards,
    Tony

    Thanks Tony,

I had noticed an array of misaligned balls on numerous VMs so wasn't to sure if these showed an obvious flaw in remakes.

The other was with the Merit, a lot of them out there have solid back reverves as opposed to the cut outs to the centre, is that a guide to the laziness of the replicator or can they be legitimate?

    Hi Stefan,

The Merit crosses without the cutouts are typically and indication of post war production and copies such as the Bialkiewicz products.

And with the VM’s, pre-war products made as substitutes for the government issued crosses are generally of a high quality, befitting the stature of this decoration. Ironically, makers such as Nagalski, Knedler, Gontarczyk, Owczarski, Wabinski, Reising and others produced crosses of a higher grade than the government issues themselves. But when you stop and think about it, how often have you seen anything the government has a hand in turn out better than something produced purely by the private sector?

    Cheers,
    Tony
