Hello Tessa,
Many thanks for your post you are most welcome, with regards to the Register of Recipients of the Monte Cassino Cross there are 3 listed as follows:
1) St.Strz. (Lance Corporal) Cyryl Pilipczuk Born 1908 served with 2KZaop (2nd Transport Company).
2) Kan. (Artilleryman) Leon Pilipczuk (Your Grandfather).
3) Strz. (Rifleman) Mikolaj Born 1919 served with 6BSK (6th Carpathian Rifle Battalion, 2nd Carpathian Rifle Brigade, 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division).
Unfortunately no mention of Sergiusz, it could be that after his time in the soviet gulag he was still unfit for service at that time.
At the time of the Battle of Monte Cassino the Polish 2nd Corps numbered approximately 48,800 and by the end of the war the 2nd Corps numbered over 110,000 personnel.
The only way of finding out would be to obtain a copy of his service record from the British M-o-D.
I have also checked Sergiusz in the P's of which there are 5 as follows:
1) Saper Sergiusz Panasiuk Born 1917 DS5KDP
2) Strz Sergiusz Pigiel Born 1921 9KZ
3) Kpr Sergiusz Podlipski Born 1906 5BSK
4) Kpr Sergiusz Poklad Born 1910 5BSK
5) Strz Sergiusz Peochorowicz Born 1917 18BS
Tessa I have searched all that I can for you with unfortunately no luck in finding your Great Uncle Sergiusz Pilipczuk.
I truly think that the wisest option would be to pay the M-o-D the £30.00p and let them provide you with his information, but be sure to ask for photocopies of all the records they hold otherwise you will just receive a one or two page letter detailing his service.
Best wishes
Andrzej
