    Up for sale on Ebay at this moment are a pair of ID Tags, to a Polish Soldier, a little investigation on my part produced the following information.

    A.P. 1905-39-III RZ.KAT. Witkowski Antoni

    The above ID Tags belonged to Major Antoni Witkowski

    Date of Birth : 21st December 1905

    Army Number : 1905-39-III

    Unit : 10BSK (10 Baon Saperow Korpusu) (10th Corps Engineers Battalion)

    During the World War 2, he had escaped from Poland in 1939 and made his way to France in 1940 he was evacuated to England and after arriving he was sent up to Scotland to an Engineers Battalion. In 1942 he was sent to the Middle East to help form the Engineers Units of the 2nd Corps and with the Corps fought during the Italian Campaign. For his service during World War 2 he was also awarded the Silver Cross Virtuti Militari Numbered : 9980, the Army Medal and the Monte Cassino Cross Numbered : 38842 along with the British 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, 1939-1945 Defence Medal, 1939-1945 War Medal.

    After the end of the War in Europe he came to the UK with his Battalion and after being demobbed from the Polish Resettlement Corps and being joined by his wife they left England on the 21st December 1948 onboard the RMS Newfoundland bound for Boston Mass. USA.

    After arriving in the US on the 3rd January 1949 he applied for and was granted US Citizenship

    Petition for Naturalization for Antoni Witkowski

    His Social Security Number was 567401085, his last Address was : 94563, Orinda, Contra Costa, California, USA. Major Antoni Witkowski died there on the 19th October 1984 aged 78, he was buried in the Mountain View Cemetery, California.

    So on this occasion quite a bit of information can be obtained from a humble pair of ID Tags.

    Hopefully the following information is what you are looking for, when awarded the Monte Cassino Cross the Recipients details were as follows :

    Additional information regarding plut. Stanisław Simiński:

    He was interned in Lithuania on 20th September 1939, then imprisoned in soviet camps in Ponoj and Juża. He joined the Anders Army on 4th September 1941 in Tatiszczewo. After the end of the war he returned to Poland (in 1946-47).

    Many thanks for your post, it is always a pleasure to help, if you required further information on your Great Grandfathers Service, you would need to write to the British Ministry of Defence if you do so please be sure to ask for copies of all records that they hold otherwise you would just receive a letter briefly outlining his service details. They do charge for this service the link is below :

    Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK

    or for your Great Grandfathers Service Record prior to the September 1939 Campaign you would need to write to :

    Por. Zbigniew Lewicki with his wife Maria (nee Pawlicka-Poraj) and first daughter (they had three daughters in total)

    Por. Zbigniew Lewicki was born on 10th January 1920 in Ławki near Łuków. As a Corporal Cadet Artillery Officer of the 27th Light Artillery Regiment (27 PAL) he took part in the September Campaign 1939. Imprisoned in the soviet concentration camp in Kołyma.

    He went through the entire battle trail with the Anders army to Bologna where in the years 1946-47 he studied medicine. On 15th September he married with Maria (nee Pawlicka-Poraj) who was a Home Army (AK) member in the rank of Corporal. She had the pseudonym "Jagoda" and was a nurse in the Warsaw Uprising. On 17th September 1944 she was awarded the Cross of Valour. After the fall of the Uprising she was taken prisoner. After being released by American troops she was then transported to Italy where she joined the PSK in the 2nd Corps. When she was in the Military School in Porto San Gorgio she met Por. Zbigniew Lewicki.

    On 6th October 1947 they went to Gudburg Camp. Suffolk, England. In England Por. Zbigniew Lewicki has completed a 5 year course of architectural studies at the School of Architecture, Polish University Collage in London.

    In 1953 they left for Montreal, Canada where Zbigniew worked as a respected architect. After some time he had a serious heart disease which he fell ill in Kołyma. He died in Baltimore in 1960.
