I was very happy to see it sell well. It came from the estate of a English collector who had passed away. So pleased for his family.

    Cheers, Ade.

    Hello Everyone,

I came across a marriage that was a Recipients with the Monte Cassino Cross:

    Monte Cassino cross

    Monte Cassino cross

Ochotniczka Janina Hofman, Army Mumber: 1922-88-III, Unit: 161 Military Hospital [later 2 Military Hospital - stationed at Campobasso], MCC Nr: 42016

Janina Hofman (nee Maciulewicz) was born on 24th June 1922 in Wołożyn. As a teenager she survived the exile of her family to Kazakhstan, her escape from there, arrest by the NKWD, another escape and return to exile. Later she joined the forming Polish Armed Forces in the USSR and became a nurse for the Polish Red Cross in Hospital Nr 2 in Kanaqin, Iraq. There she met her husband Kapitan Alfred Hofman with whom she married on 29th January 1944 in the Basilica of the Nations in Jerusalem. After moving to Italy she worked in the 161 Military Hospital in the surgical ward.

After the Battle of Monte Cassino Janina with her military hospital went to Ancona. Janina's husband Kpt. Alfred Hofman badly wounded by a shrapnel also ended up here.

Some post war photographs of Janina Hofman

In 1948 they returned to Poland. After their return the fate of thousands of soldiers fighting in the Polish Armed Forces in the West awaited them - harassment by the UB. Recipient of the Virtuti Militari Captain Alfred Hofman was verified a private, he was not recognized as an officer, he was not employed. He did odd jobs, dug ditches, etc.

She worked in the Ambulance Service and as the head of nurses in the Emergency Department of the Provincial Hospital in Tarnobrzeg.

It was only after 1989 that Janina received well-deserved recognition. She was awarded the rank of Lieutenant of the Polish Army and for the entirety of her nursing service. She was also awarded, as one of the few Polish women, the highest laureate of the International Red Cross, the Florence Nightingale Medal.

Kpt. Alfred Hofman died in 1990 in Tarnobrzeg and Janina died in 2017 in Koszalin.

    Hello Konrad,

Many thanks for your post, unfortunately Kpt. Alfred Hofman was not awarded the Monte Cassino Cross, no doubt he joined the battle after Monte Cassino.

    Best wishes

    Hello Everyone,

Thank you Andrzej for the supplementary information.

And most likely another women Face of a Recipient of the Monte Cassino Cross:

    Monte Cassino cross

Regina Giercarz (married name Sudoł), Army Number: ?, Unit: ?, MCC Nr: ?

She was born on 16th March 1926 in Stara Wilejka now located within Lithuania. After the Red Army entered she and her relatives shared the fate of many Polish families. They were deported to Uzbekistan.

Together with Anders' Army she went through the entire combat route, leading through Iraq and Palestine to Italy where she ended her military service in Bologna. She served as a driver - paramedic.

After the end of the Italian Campaign she ended up in England where she met Stanisław Sudoł whom she married.

I found one sierż. Stanisław Sudoł on the 3 DSK Soldiers List - Army Number:1902-26-III, Unit: 5 BSK. But have no idea if this is him.

In 1947 they returned to Poland where Regina found a job as a nurse in the emergency room in Tarnobrzeg where she worked for many years being a subordinate of a nurse of the 2nd Polish Corps who also went through its entire combat trail - Janina Hofman (see post: 4095).
