Hello Everyone,
Quite an interesting set of decorations, including the Monte Cassino Cross with pretty rare I think box made by M. F. Forioli Fratelli Milano and the Silver Cross of Merit with Swords, awarded to an Officer from the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division:
Porucznik (Lieutenant) Stefan Stegner, Army Number: 1913-539-III, Unit: 2 Kompania Zaopatrywania 3 Dywizji Strzelców Karpackich (2nd Supply Company of the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division), Monte Cassino Cross numbered 10781
The set was sold at auction for PLN 4130.
Have any of you seen such a box for the Monte Cassino Cross before? Tony Zawadzki?
Regards
Konrad
Hi Konrad
Nice photo's showing a nice group of medals. Unfortunately I think there is a small problem.
Cross number 10781 shown in your photo's belonged to : kan Kaazimierz Rataj. 1924/14/III. 1 Karp.P.A.L. 1st Field Art Reg.3rd Carpathian Inf Div.
Now I must point out that my list is only about 90% complete but I cannot find a Stefan Stegner in the Monte Cassino list.
The next point I would like to make is his serial number, 539. Being a high number I would think he joined the 2nd Corps after Monte Cassino.
But that is just my opinion.
Regards Kevin
Hello Kevin,
I answer to your doubts regarding the number of the Monte Cassino Cross awarded to Porucznik Stefan Stegner, his Monte Cassino Cross number is 10781. The Cross in this number was in fact awarded twice, to Por. Stefan Stegner (1913-539-III) and to Kanonier Kazimierz Rataj (1924-14/-III). The Cross awarded to Kan. Rataj was canceled as twice awarded and replaced by the Cross numbered 10956:
The only doubt is the Army Number of Por. Stegner as on the Monte Cassino Cross Recipient List his number is 1913-539, but on the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division Soldiers List is 1913-166.
Regards
Konrad
The listing at 3 DSK - "R" - krzyz.montecassino.eu has been updated to show that kan. K. Rataj did not receive 10781, but 10956.
