I think it was painted a long time ago but after the war.
There were snow camos used in WW1 but unfortunately this isn’t one of them. Does look like an original size 64 shell at least.
I like your display Axel, looks very well thought out!

So, here's where I'm at now. I've slowly removed the paint when I've had time. The helmet only cost me 5 euros and it's in bad shape so I thought it wouldn't be a significant loss if it got ruined. I'm thinking of repainting it or might just leave it as is. Kinda looks like it has a greenish layer of paint.
Maybe it's not a top-shelf helmet, but a helmet nonetheless
I wouldn’t repaint it if I was you. It looks nice as it is in my opinion.
I agree, it looks better without the odd white overpaint. A nice display of pieces as well.
I know it is not about the helmet… But, what is the armband on the “top” of your first picture?
The green looks like the original field grey. I would leave the green paint as well, and perhaps just remove the remaining red and white paint.
How’s the inside looking?
Yes, I see your point Axel. I always see a helmet as a soldiers life, so just do the best you can and that’s all that can really be done. And display it in memory and with pride. I think it’s the most appropriate course of action.
