Default SS SD M42 helmet after oxalic acid bath

    Hello everyone,

I decided to buy this helmet locally and tried to get something more out of the SS decal and it turned out fairly well. The seller found this at the positions of the 19th SS near Džūkste. The size is fairly large and it has some battle damage. I coated the decal with wax and plan to clean the helmet some more in the next coming weeks. What do you think? Can you tell the manufacturer from the decal? Thank you!

Nice pickup. What have you tried using to clean it with? You may be able to expose some more paint by using oxalic acid but a word of warning - oxalic acid is dangerous stuff so proper precautions must be taken. Here’s a link to some more info: Relic M35 rust removal, electrolysis or oxalic acid?

Also do a search using the search box as there are lots of threads about using it and the results plus there are alternatives.

    Good luck!

Hi, I already cleaned it with oxalic acid I put in some before pictures. I'm planning to remove most of the rust mechanically without damaging the paint and decal of course.

Sorry, just read the full title of your post (face slap).....there isn’t really enough detail to say what type of decal but nice that you got some paint back too!

EF SS decal IMHO. Based on the sharp angle of the runes and the shield break points.
They made a lot of SS M42 helmets.
