$1 Canadian Brodie!

This brodie is in quite a sad state! I bought it at a flea market last week for $1, just like this. I don't know why it was stripped of its paint, but I wasn't going to leave it either. It is G.S.W. Marked, with a date of 1941. The only thing it's good for really is a restoration project, because it sure doesn't display well. I already ordered a liner and chinstrap for it, and that should come in the mail today.

But I know not a darn thing about Brodie helmets, and especially not Canadian ones. What color is it supposed to be? Are colors specific to branch service? What about insignia? I've been looking at Brodie helmets on the forum, and I see some neat helmets I like, but I don't know if say, a Royal Artillery Flash, would belong on a Canadian helmet. Are there any paints that I can pick up at Wal-Mart that would match anything prototypical?

Canadian kit is highly prized in Europe, not easy to find. You've done well with your $ deal.

I put in the liner just to see how easy it would be, and then I ran into a problem. How in the heavens am I supposed to attach the chin strap?

I think I broke my thumb trying to get it to fit. Does it need "help" with a screwdriver or something? The bale or whatever the silver thingie is called seems stubbornly snug to the helmet, and does not allow room for the chin strap.

Might need a little help with a screw driver? make sure not to scratch anything, put something under the lever point.

I have a specialty rubber tipped tool just for this. I'll try some more. I think I should paint it though first.

The British changed from this design to the MkIII sheath because of how hard it was to change the straps. Screwdriver is a requirement to put on straps.

Here's mine of the same maker and year. The paint colours can differ slightly due to different manufacturers and years. I would guess that it would have been very similar to mine.



Finding the right colour might be the hard part.

Well fellas, I cannot get the chinstrap on to save my life. I couldn't snap the chin strap in for anything, so I opened up the bale a bit. Now I got the chinstrap in, but can't get it to stay in! The nternet does not seem to do me any good. What gives??
