Just found my father painting in the above . Unfortunatly there is gloss paint on it. Any ideas how I can remove this without damaging the smock.

Unfortunately the paint will have penetrated right through the fibres of the smock, which is a real pain to remove, you cant use ordinary paint remover on it, nor meths or turps, there is a stain remover on the market that i believe can remove some paint but youll need to be careful , it may take a number of applications, and it might possibly leave a much lighter patch, its called Stainz-R-Out. Ive just been informed that brush restorer fluid might do the trick but again it will need great care taken and use very sparingly and you start by using it from the rear of the stain
