Any tips on medal cleaning? (Specifically a 1914/15 star)

Hi all. This is mainly in relation to a 1914/15 star in the collection that I have noticed has an increasing amount of some sort of white deposit on it. I am just wondering if someone can recommend the best way to clean this off that will not hurt the medal? I do not want to polish it, just get this white stuff off. Cheers.

it probably residue fom metal polish,nail brush and hot water.

Here is a photo of the medal in question. So just a soft brush and hot water should do it? Cheers.

Hi there,

as harryamb2 has said above it looks like residue from old polish, and you can't go wrong with a nail brush and water mate. Good luck!

I keep an old electric toothbrush used with new soft head to clean non-ferrous metal badges etc with warm soapy water

Hi, Agree with all that has been said however may I suggest a tooth brush rather than a nail brush. More and better control and you can see what you are trying to clean. Also works on sword hilts and visor braiding and all sorts of of other cleaning jobs, a bit like Handy Andy!!
