    Default cleaning a medal?

Hoo boy, know this will be a bit controversial but here we go.
picked up a pair of Kriegsverdienstkreuz medals today. thought they were neat, and the price wasn't too high. the only problem is both of them appeared to have been "glued" to something at some point in time. I want to clean off whatever it is but I don't want to hurt them if I can help it, any suggestions? its a sort of waxy substance, kind of soft, reminds me of caulk or maybe even clay.
    any help is appreciated! thanks! cleaning a medal?cleaning a medal?cleaning a medal?

Some warm water, a little dish soap, and a bit of sudsy ammonia, along with a soft toothbrush, should do the trick.
I would try that first, just be sure to dry thoroughly after.
