Default Fluid Film for use on relics/rust?

    Hi,

Has anyone ever heard of or tried a product called Fluid Film on rusted relics? It is a lanolin based rust "encapsulator", not a remover or converter, is supposedly safe on painted surfaces and contains no solvents. I have used it on other metal parts (cars, boats, etc) and it does as promised - it doesn't remove the rust but stops it from spreading. It will wash off over time (so not a true undercoating as it needs to be re-applied, but I've seen cars that are 5+ years old that were initially & then periodically re-treated with it with undercarriages that look almost new - no rusting). Stuff is available at Lowe's for about $9 a can.

Usually it is left as sprayed on with any excess allowed to drip away but for relic helmets and other militaria I was wondering if using it with a wipe on/off method leaving just a thin coating would be beneficial or a possible solution to stopping or slowing rust expansion/degradation.:

"FLUID FILM® is formulated from specially processed wool-wax, highly refined petroleum oils and selected agents to provide corrosion control, penetration, metal wetting and water displacement. The long lasting product contains no solvents, will not dry out and will penetrate to the base of all metals, providing corrosion protection from both natural and industrial atmospheres."

"FLUID FILM will protect all metals from oxidation and atmospheric corrosion, including steel, copper, lead, tin and zinc. It will stop chrome and brass from pitting and aluminum and magnesium from oxidizing."

"FLUID FILM is a lanolin based product containing no solvents. It will not evaporate or dry from the surface. FLUID FILM will leave a wet, non-drying film, that will provide long term corrosion protection on all metals and superior lubrication for all moving parts."

"Where most products contain between seventy and ninety percent solvent, FLUID FILM contains none except for its propellant, meaning long lasting lubrication and protection. With no solvent, FLUID FILM won’t evaporate or become sticky or gummy, allowing it to migrate to other areas for lubrication or protection. With its unique lanolin base, FLUID FILM will actually imbed itself in the pores of metal, resisting wash off and keeping moisture and oxygen from getting to the base metal."

Do you work for the company? It reads like an advertisement!

Seems like Vaseline or Gun oil would do the same, no?

For UK listeners! It sounds very much like WaxOl which is a similar type of treatment and it works absolute wonders in preserving vintage cars but I'm not sure it would be practical or useful on items you intend to keep in your living quarters.
