Hi folks, I purchased a WWII era M1 helmet liner to go with a shell. The chin strap for the liner is deteriorating. As you can see in the photos, it is shedding the brown outer layer. What can I do to preserve it without destroying it? Thanks, Neil

Is the leather brittle or torn? If it’s not and is structural sound I wouldn’t do anything. If it’s close to a lose I would say a good leather treatment but if you don’t have any on hand I wouldn’t spend a lot because it’s value is already on the downside. M1 leather chinstraps prices are in the raise and a green buckle is 85-120.00.

You could apply something to rejuvenate the leather if it is dried out, but as said might be best left alone.
