    Hello!

I recently picked up this beautiful Estonian Pilot Badge. These green spots however, are bothering me. As it’s the first time I’ve owned a badge with this type of problem I’m looking for some advice on how to treat them? Can they even be removed?

    Thanks for your time!

    Tobias

P.S: The pics are uploaded from my phone so I have no clue how they turned put for you guys!

Hi Sensei...I think it depends what the base content of the metal is ...as we see copper and brass do this ...or if it comes in contact with leather ...it would be verdigris.
Wait for other thoughts from other members who do restoration.

Problem solved, I tested a tiny amount of vaseline and carefully used a swab to scrabe it off and it worked MUCH better than expected!

Now I'm even happier with this badge.

Although you have solved the problem, normally a dab of vinegar on a cotton bud solves the problem straight away. just remember to rinse it off afterwards.

I don't know anything about Estonian awards, but I like this one, it definitely has "presence". Glad you got the green marks off it!

I'm glad I got them off aswell, really shows the beauty of the badge. I had it confirmed original by other collectors aswell.

Here are some more photos of it paired with some other of my badges:

    Best regards, Tobias

That's what I was going to advise, but see you already did it.

Some collectors are vehemently against absolutely any kind of cleaning or preservation. I, on the other hand, think allowing active corrosion/oxidation to continue is insane.

I agree 100%. Better to fix the problem then to have it slowly destroyed.

Awesome badge, thanks for sharing. My small input.

Before ww2 it was common to share pilot badges between friendly nations.

We can see this badge rarely in use with Finnish pilots in 1920-ties pictures.
Reference tunic photo where Estonian pilot badge is included as well.

    Thank you, Interesting info!

I found these photos of Latvian Pilot's wearing the Estonian one:

They could also be worn by Pilot's who fled to fight with the Luftwaffe, and as far as I know they could NOT be worn by Estonian pilots fighting for the USSR!
