Re: Heer M42 helmet project
WOW! Looks great!
Do you plan to use anything to age the wire basket?
I remember seeing an artificial patina product on ancient coin collecting websites... I think people would clean certain coins down to the bare metal and them dip them in the artificial patina liquid. It would create either a dark blackish, greenish, or brownish patina (depending on which of the three types of artificial patina product you used) on the exposed metal of ancient coins. The colors would recreate the unique patinas you'd find on ancient coins in specific areas (For example, the conditions in Italy would create a patina a different color than an ancient coin found in other parts of Europe, Africa, etc.). I've always wondered if this product could be useful on restored helmets...

Re: Heer M42 helmet project
G'day Giz, I will attempt to age it somehow, very im=nteresting about the coin stuff! It's only a prototype and cost me Zilch as it's all made from scrap, i think the trick would be to find old wire and go again.

Re: Heer M42 helmet project
Phil, the best wire to use is old barbed wire, what i do is find some old stuff on a farm etc, cut a good length off, undo the twist(if its double strand), remove the barb twist and your left with some good rusty wire to work with, obviously if its too rusty and fragile it will break, so you have to guage it, the same with chicken wire, the older the better
