    what's your best method for removing the surface rust without damaging any of the paintwork ? Oxalic acid ?

    Electolys too, but very hard with white wash, if it's painted with waterbased paint

    That rust looks deeper than surface rust! Were you able to stop the active rusting?

    No more active rusting on this helmet, due of no rust under the paint. Just place a bit of vaseline to the helmet
