Rust removal on an M40

Article about: Gents, I purchased a rusted out shell of an M40 to convert into a lamp shade. Lots of rust flakes, pin holes and areas of very thin metal. Without using electrolysis or chemical baths I was

I've used all of the above over the years. Citric acid is the least dangerous or severe in my opinion but something left in ANY acid for too long will go back to base metal ( and you don't want to lose all the patina of age )

I would probably not use a vinegar soak with this shell as you could be left with more ventilation than you wanted. Look forward to seeing how you get on.

Took it out of the Oxalic bath this morning. Sat for approx 18 hours in the acid.

Now it's drying. Doesn't look like a lot of rust came off but a lot did. Just luck at the bucket!

Once dry I will decide if it needs a tea bath or something else. I'm not trying to remove all the rust. I want the "relic" look. Just don't want it to shed rust

End of Step 1 - All dried. Lots of rust was removed. Now looks all bright red rust but this should fade. Not visible in the photos but lots of acid bleach feldgrau paint can now be seen.

Next is a coating of RenWax (or something similar) or a Tea Bath....

This is what it should look like if soaked in tea. Mind you, it wasn't as rusty as yours, so that's why there's not much rust present at all.
