Regarding a metal detector....
Hi, I recently joined, and I have a very important question. I'm going to Poland for vacation, and my friends own a lot of land, in which they found 2 Mauser ww2 bayonets. And of course I'm jealous, so I was looking to buy a good quality metal detector. I'm low on cash, looking for a metal detector for $250 tops. I've narrowed my searches to a fisher f2, or a garrett 250...but I could not find much about the depths they reach...I'm looking for relics in at least 2 feet of moist dirt...any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum
Two feet doesn't sound much but is quite some depth when it's you digging the hole !
Most MDs will get down to this depth if the object is large enough. I have found items of the size you're looking for at about 2 feet. The difference between MDs isn't necessarily 'depth', but more about how much they can discriminate against background mineralisation and other factors.
I use a Bounty Hunter detector (sharp shooter II) and find larger items at the depth you're aiming for. However, things the size of a small cartridge case or button will not be picked up at this depth. You would need a specialised deep search machine and those are NOT cheap !
Both the detectors you have mentioned will get to that depth. Both are well known 'relic' machines. Pick one and give it a go !

Re: Regarding a metal detector....
Thank you Steve T...yeah, I'm expecting to find artillery shells, canteens, a possible piece of weaponry...not looking for any buried tiger tanks or half tracks, but thanks for the info...I'm probably going to purchase a fisher f2....

Re: Regarding a metal detector....
Hi and welcome,
I've used the garret- good enough machine for the money, but you won't get 2 foot with most machines unless it's BIG, like plough parts. Up to about a foot for coin sized things, perhaps.
Good Luck and let us know what you find!
Jim.

Re: Regarding a metal detector....
yeah, my friends only found empty artillery shells...last time I heard...but yeah, my friend has recently graduated from college majoring in archeology, so yeah, he knows most of the precautions.
